Te Araroa, Day 56

Dec. 30, 2023, Rivertime Lodge to Whanganui, Hikurangi stay place, 29,5 km, 1297,6

29.5 km today.

The last stretch to Whanganui.

I start at 6:30 am.

On the way, there is a sheep lying on its back in the paddock. It cannot get up. I hope it is not dying.

I also see a wild peacock.

I have a break before the road winds uphill and another one on the top where there is a beautiful view of the river and the valley that we walked and paddled through.

After 14 km on that rural road today, we get to the highway. We walk 6 km along the highway.

Following is that, another break at a village cafe, and then it is walking on bike lanes all the way to the Hikurangi stay place in Whanganui.

At the last kilometers, heavy rain sets in, and I am completely drenched when arriving at the accommodation at 13:45. The place looks like a hospital to me, and I learn that it used to be a retirement home.

Later, when the rain stops, we walk into town. I need cash. I just spent my last cash, and getting more in rural areas is needed.
