Dec. 16, 2023, Shelter at North Road to Pureora, start of the Timber Trail, 37 km (km 957,1), 8 hrs 10 min
I start walking at 6:20 am. The route is mostly a gravel road through farmland. At the end, there are 8 km on a busy highway and then another 3 km road to the start of the Timber trail.
A lot of road today. No sun. Some sun comes out later at the campsite.
First break. A ditch by the road can be quite comfortable. The Backpack is the backrest on one side of the ditch and the legs can rest leveled up on the other side. Viz is very comfortable. Try it:
A Māori family owns a place where people can set up their tents or get a bunk bed. We ask for a room just for two and get offered a caravan for $10. It is not clean at all but we don't want to pack wet tents in the morning. We take the caravan, and I put my own mattress on top of one of the beds to sleep on. I feel better that way:
After that long walk today, I feel very hungry. When a young German passes, who is traveling by bike with his father, he must have seen my hunger. He asks if we want some food.
I certainly want some food.
He gives me an avocado - not yet ripe - and some chocolate. He also gives me a spoonful of some superfood powder that should give me some superpower. Apart from it feeling very dusty in my throat, I don't notice the superpower, but I am grateful for his care.
Later, "the flog" arrives with a new temporary member. The dad of the German woman joined for 2 weeks. They will also bike the trail starting tomorrow.
We dry our tents and anything else that needs to be dried and get ready for sleep.
