Jan 10, 2024, Paekakariki to Porirua, 24,39 km, km 1562,42, 8:09 hrs
We start today at 6:45 am. Only a few hundred meters from our accommodation, we enter the Escarpment Track. It's a three-hour walk "on the edge," high up on the coast. It is very beautiful, often steep, and should not be walked by anyone with vertigo or a fear of heights.
At some point there is a sheep on the path. It does not leave. We have to get creative to pass it...
The escarpment track is a highlight and I enjoy it very much. Coming out of it we walk along railways for quite a while. Seemingly the trains have a sign to let them know when to pull the whistle just before a train station:

Next follows some bike lane walking. The sun is excruciating again. I am glad when I can by a cool soda in one of the next towns that we pass.

On the way we also meet again a guy from Australia that we haven't seen for a while. We exchange some "news" and everyone continues their walk.

Finally Porirua is reached. Only a few hills separate us from Wellington and the end of the North Island.
Can that really be? Are we almost done with this Island?
No time to think. Shower, food and sleep is all that counts now.
