Te Araroa, Day 85

Jan. 28, 2024, St. Arnaud to 2,7 km after John Traits hut, 27,77 km, km 1815,85, 10:16 hrs

We are walking again. The start is nice: Walking along Lake Rotoiti for about 10 km. Then we take a break at Lakehead Hut.
Due to an invasion of millions of sandflies, we have to stay inside for the break.
After the break, there is about 3 km through an open valley before we enter the forest. There is a lot of up and down inside the forest with little streams and small mud holes. We can't keep our shoes and socks dry.

We have another break at a river, cooking lunch, to have enough energy for the remaining kilometers.

We keep on walking after passing John Tait Hut to find a spot for our tents close to a river.

I have a lot of pain in my right foot today while walking, and I decide to try the insoles again tomorrow.

Lake Rotoiti, St. Arnaud:

Walking along the lake:

Break at Lakehead hut:

Valley views:

One person only swing bridge.... Those bridges feel very fragile. It is just wire. One sees everything below the feet. One has to find a way of walking them without swinging too much....:

Lunch break:

Another bridge, much easier to walk and some more impressions:

After almost 10,5 hrs we set up our tents.
