Te Araroa, Day 71

Jan. 14, 2024, Ferry Wellington to Picton (South Island), Zero Day

Finally, today we are going to the South Island. We'll be traveling on two different ferries. There was just no space left when I tried to book my ticket right after X booked his.

Like at the airport, check-in is latest one hour before boarding the ferry. I arrive about two hours before departure. The waiting room is packed with people, and I am grateful once more that I have those noise-canceling earbuds with me.

Finally, we are boarding. It's a little walk to the ferry and then some staircases up. The ship gets flooded with people. When I get out of the cramped staircase, the first thing I see is this:

I stay there the whole "journey," which takes 3.5 hrs. I try to go outside, but due to a lot of wind and high waves, the exit doors were closed on this ferry.

We have a cabin at one of the holiday parks in Picton:

Once I got settled, we walk into town to find food.

Today it's pizza. -> In towns it is either Pizza or (for me Vegetarian) Burgers and Fries. There is most of the time nothing else here. For me. You might have noticed.

Tomorrow we will start the journey down the South Island. A water taxi will bring us to "Ship Cove," further up North in the "Marlborough Sounds," and for a few days, we will walk along the coastline on real tracks, regularly maintained by the Department of Conservation (DOC). I am looking forward to this.
