Te Araroa, Day 80

Jan 23, 2024, Mt. Rintoul Hut to Tarn Hut, 8,42 km, km 1763,08, 5:16 hrs

It had been raining last night and is still raining when I wake up. I am tired from the past few days and glad that the rain continues. I don't want to leave the tent.

I hear people leaving. I take my time and leave at 9:45, after the rain has stopped.

I am in the clouds in the forest again. There is one climb up to a peak before it continues up and down walking in the forest.

Like yesterday, I can hardly see the markers while ascending and descending the peak. I am glad when I am back in the forest. Visibility is better, and I am protected from the cold wind.

I am tired when I reach Tarn Hut at about 3:00 pm. I set up the tent and rinse some clothing in the lake nearby.
Some time later, the "Bird Guys" show up, and I ask why I hardly hear any birds anymore since I am on the South Island. Answer: There is hardly any pest control here. That is true. On the North Island, there are traps and poison everywhere. I haven't seen much here.

The "Bird guys" had spent the night with X at Old Man Hut, did the Rintoul Mountains, and came to Tarn Hut. They are tough and fast - and have shoes with traction.

I realize that X will not know that I will go down tomorrow to Lower Goulter Hut. He had no mobile reception. He left already today going down, and at one point, he will also pass Lower Goulter Hut. I just don't know when.
The sign at Tarn Hut says that it will take 6 hrs down to that hut. I will see tomorrow how it will go.
